"I recognize you, doctor," said Rai looking effusively at a health worker, Hari Joshi, who was removing the cloth covering his eyes after the surgery on Wednesday morning.Rai, whose son had carried him to the eye camp on his back, was seen walking around the hospital premises excitedly after his left eyesight was restored.
Similarly, Muna Kutwal, 80, of Diktel Municipality-9, whose impaired vision in the left eye was restituted at the camp, said, "My vision isn't clouded anymore. Now I can walk around without help.".
The eye camp, held on Monday and Tuesday, was a joint initiatve of Chaudhary Eye Hospital, Lahan, Khotang District Hospital, Diktel, and Netra Jyoti Sangh, Khotang. The camp successfully restored eyesight of 82 people. A team of doctors led by surgeon Dr Notwar Singh of Lahan had performed the surgeries.
According to the organizers, surgeries were performed on 34 patients on the first day and 48 patients on the second day. A total of 746 people who arrived at the camp received free checkups and medicines.
"Our camp aimed to provide free treatment especially to those who couldn't afford it or travel very far seeking eye treatment," said Indra Kasaju, secretary of Netra Jyoti Sangh. He added that elderly and children benefited the most from the camp.
