Former footballer Singh passes away

KATHMANDU, Nov 27: Former national football player Narendra Man Singh passed away on Friday morning while undergoing treatment at Model Hospital. Singh, 51, was suffering from jaundice for the last two weeks. [break]



He was cremated at Teku Pachali on Friday. All Nepal Football Association Vice President Lalit Krishna Shrestha and CEO Indraman Tuladhar wrapped his body with ANFA flag. He is survived by his wife and a son.



Singh, who started playing domestic tournaments in 1971, was one of the best strikers of his time. Singh debuted in the first division league in 1975 from Sankata Club and represented Nepal in the 23rd Asian Youth Football in 1981, Kathmandu and scored two goals against India for a 4-2 win.



A year later, he played in the national jersey in the ninth Asian Games in New Delhi in 1982.



He is the first Nepali player to play professional football in India. He started from Mafatlal Group SC, Mumbai, and later shifted to Mahindra & Mahindra, now known as Mahindra United, the first division club of Indian League.



Singh spent eight years in Indian football and returned in 1990 to join Sankata in the Martyrs Memorial League in 1995, 1997 and 2000. He also assumed roles of vice-president and coach for Sankata.



Before starting his professional football life in India, he played for Sankata, RCT, Royal Drugs, Friends Club and Nepal Army Club.
