Football craze propels LCD sales

KATHMANDU, June 13: With FIFA World Cup 2010 going on in full swing, dealers of leading television brands are banking on the football jamboree to boost the sales of televisions, especially LCD sets, in the market.



Stores have reported rise in the sale of large and flat panel television sets in recent days, thanks to the increasing popularity of LCD sets and the craze of watching the game on flat panel television. [break]



Dealers of leading TV brands like Samsung, Sony, LG and Philips, among others have recorded a healthy rise in LCD sales. TV stores around have no hesitation in saying that the rise in LCD sales is due to the ongoing football fever.



Nepa Hima Trade Link, the authorized distributor of Sony electronics in Nepal, says they have been recording impressive sales of televisions due to the FIFA World Cup. "The sale of Sony LCD TV has gone up almost cent percent in the last few days," Ramesh Bista, operation director of Sony for Nepal, said.



Bista said the football fever coupled with attractive promotional schemes have propelled sales of LCD TVs. KLV 32-BX 300 and KLV-40 EX 300 are the largest selling Sony LCDs in recent days, according to Bista.



Another popular home appliances brand Philips has also been seeing rise in LCD sales. Tej Shrestha of Philips showroom at Kantipath said people are more curious about the scheme on LCD televisions which they recently launched. "We have already sold more than 35 LCDs after we launched ´Old is Sold´ World Cup offer a few days ago," he added.



Shrestha said LCD TVs are immensely popular among customers because they are available in reasonable price. "The demand for LCD TV is at its peak," Shrestha said, adding that 32PFL5403 model LCD available at Rs 67,990 is the top selling set at Philips showroom.



Samsung Plaza, which deals with home appliances by Samsung, is also experiencing rise in the demands for LCD televisions.



"The demand for LCD TV sets at present is three-times higher than what use to see on normal days," Nilam Gauchan, sales executive at Samsung Plaza, informed myrepublica.com. She said Samsung LA40C530 and LA32C350 models are getting good response from customers.



LCD sets by another popular television brand, LG, is also doing well in the market. "We have almost removed conventional sets from our shelves as more and more people are buying LCD sets these days," Kusum Lama Yonjan, marketing executive at CG Electronics, the official distributor for LG products for Nepal, said.



Yonjan said ongoing football fever and the increasing purchasing power of people were the major reasons behind the rise popularity of LCD sets. She said 32LH20 is the top selling LCD set at LG showroom.



LG was the first TV brand to introduce special scheme for FIFA World Cup 2010.
