The award ceremony is scheduled for July 2 and national cricket team coach Pubudu Dassanayake, young wushu coach Yuvaraj Gurung, veteran Karate coach Akabar Shah, chief-coach of Nepali swimming Ongden Lama and veteran athletics coach Nar Bahadur Shahi have been nominated for the coach of the year, one of the eight award categories.
Dassanayake had guided Nepali national cricket team to the title victories during the World Cricket League Division 4, ACC Trophy Elite in the Nepali calendar year 2069 BS. Nepal reached the final of ACC T20 Cup for the first time in 2069 BS under his guidance. The coach is also credited for establishing National Cricket Academy to shape the future of Nepali cricket.
Young wushu coach Gurung, who is yet to retire from his playing career, proved his coaching talent as he guided Chahana Bomjan Lama to the World Junior Wushu Championship to claim bronze medal. Lama had claimed bronze medal in the sansau 60 kg weight category.
Akabar Shah was the coach during Nepal´s historical achievement in karate during the Eighth South Asian Games held in Kathmandu in 1999, when Nepali karate had clinche 14 gold medals out of 16. He received the national duty after 13 years and guided Ganga Adhikari and Sunil Lama to the 13th Asia Pacific Shitoryo Championship, where both of them claimed gold medals. He guided four others for silver medals and seven others for bronze medals in the championship held in Hong Kong.
Swimming coach Ongden Lama is the coach of Nepal No 1 swimmers Shirish Gurung and Shreya Dhital. Gurung clinched 32 domestic gold medals, including six national records, in 2069 BS under Lama´s guidance. Likewise, Lama guided Dhital to London Olympics and helped her in winning 13 domestic gold medals and in setting two national records.
Veteran athletics coach Shahi helped Nepal Police Club in winning nine gold medals, three silver and four bronze during the 38th National Athletics Championship. Under his guidance, Keshari Chaudhary set three national records and Tilak Ram Tharu made a new national record.
