Gurung was the first tourism minister of Nepal and Herzog was the first person to climb Mt Annapurna. On June 3, 1950, Herzog had successfully scaled Annapurna to become the first person to scale peaks over 8,000 meters.[break]
All the athletes will have to cover a distance of 42.195 kilometers from the Base Camp, at an altitude of 4,550 meters, and will finish at Dhampus at an elevation of 1,770 meters. Athletes will have to pass through Sinuwa Danda, Chomrong, Landruk, Tolka and Pothana to complete the race.
South Asian Games gold medalist Rajendra Bhandari, Jeet Bahadur KC, South Asian Games record-holding marathoner Baikuntha Manandhar and Bimala Ranabhat will be judging the race.
The race is expected to promote sports tourism and adventure sports in the region. According to race coordinator Khadga Bahadur Ranabhat, the objective behind organizing the race is to promote June 3 as a tourism festival.
The winner will receive Rs 50,000 in the open male category while the second and third position holders will receive Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively. In the women´s category, the winner will bag a purse of Rs 25,000 while the second and third position holders will receive Rs 20,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively.
Technical director of the race and judge Manandhar said that this race will be more challenging than any other marathon. "The race will be conducted in the Himalayan region and famous runners will participate in it. It will be a interesting event for judges also."
The race is organized by Adventure Sports Tourism Society, Nepal Trekking Association, Pokhara Chapter, Pokhara Tourism Council, Nepal Mountaineering Association Annapurna Chapter, Western Hotel Association, Pokhara, Sanctuary Tourism Association, Lali Gurans Youth Club, Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon, Himalayan Expedition, Western Region Development Committee, District Sports Development Committee, Kaski and We the Annapurnas.
