Doctors have recently recovered a huge cache of medicines, most of which are date-expired, from the store room of Bheri Zonal Hospital, Nepalgunj. [break]
The recovered medicines include 2,500 bottles of saline water, which costs Rs 45 each, in addition to huge amounts of IV drip, IV set, antibiotic, Metronidazol among other live-saving drugs.
"The poor people who came to the hospital were asked to buy medicines from private shops," says Dr RK Jha, president of Hospital Development Committee. "Now, a lot of medicines that could have been distributed free of cost to the poor patients have been found."
The doctors at the zonal hospital have demanded a probe into the stockpiling of medicines while the poor patients remained deprived of free medicines. "We want to know whether the hospital administration deliberately purchased the medicines near the expiration date or did not distribute the drugs at all," says Dr Jha.
The zonal hospital doctors have alleged Dr Narendra Kumar Roy, who was the chief of the hospital until recently, for deliberately not distributing free medicines to the needy ones.
