Empowering the socially excluded by training

KATHMANDU, March 24: The United Nations in Nepal rejoiced at the Graduation ceremony –“The Beginning of a New Horizon” of 20 UN Trainees on Thursday, March 22 at the UN House, Pulchowk.



The UN Traineeship Programme is an 11-month opportunity for trainees from socially excluded groups in Nepal. [break]



The participants were selected by outsourcing with Foundation for Development Management (FDM).



“We went to many colleges and NGOs to advertize the programme. Over 700 youths, including fresh graduates, teachers, social mobilizers, housewives and jobholders went under screening for the programme out of which 31 individuals were selected”, informed Pratik Bikram Rana, Program Specialist at FDM.



Each trainee was allotted into a particular UN organization where they had mentors. They were exposed to the wide and professional environment of UN.







Many of them also carried out independent researches on crucial matters such as gender equality, cultural preservation, exploring the status of senior citizens in old-age homes, usefulness of forest resources and more.



Babita Yadav, one of the graduates, expressed, “We had the opportunity to explore potentialities and groom ourselves.”



Similarly, another trainee, Sangmo Yonzon, said, “We learnt time management and stress management, planning and organizing as well as we gained technical awareness through the seminars and field programs that we got to be a part of. It has given us confidence boost and taught us to respect diversity.”



The trainees also launched their e-magazine at the event. The magazine consists of their profiles and research work which can be viewed at www.un.org.np.
