Eight students injured in fight

BHAKTAPUR, July 25: A brawl among student unions at the Sanothimi Campus here left eight students and three police personnel injured and the Campus area in a tense situation throughout the day on Wednesday.

The scuffle took place over the issues of appointing employees who are relatives of the student leaders in the Campus.[break]

Nepal Students´ Union affiliated to the Nepali Congress and All Nepal National Free Students´ Union (ANNFSU) affiliated to the CPN-UML objected to the appointment of the relatives of All Nepal National Independent Students´ Union (ANNISU) office-bearers affiliated to the Maoist party in the Campus library.

The situation took an ugly turn after the NSU and ANNFSU vehemently objected the ANNISU decision to recruit relative and obstructed the new employees from registering their attendance and set their appointment letters on fire.

The student groups affiliated to the political parties pelted stones at one another.

Suresh Oli, Yanjal Karki, ,Shiv Ram Shrestha Netra Karki, Sajan Shrestha, Ram Chandra Khatri, Tej Bahadur Basnet and Kamal Raj Timilsina were the students injured in the brawl, said NSU central member Bikash Thapa. The injured are undergoing treatment at a local community hospital, he added.

Assistant sub-inspector of police Arbind Yadav and police constables Ishwor Budhathoki and Sher Kumar Sibakoti were also injured in the incident.

The Campus administration had appointed Kavita Dahal Basnet, wife of ANNISU central member Biredra Basnet, Samjhana Bhandari wife of ANNISI district Vice-Chairman Subash Dhakal and Narendra Singh Dhami, nephew of ANNISU Campus Unit Chair Ganesh Budhathoki on July 22.
