Dr KC, who has staged fast-unto-death five times in the past, said that no one from the government had contacted him to discuss his demands until Tuesday evening."I have no choice but to go on a hunger strike again. No one from the government has contacted me to discuss the issues I had raised," said Dr KC, who had given an ultimatum to the government to act on the recommendations of the Mathema committee by 4 pm Wednesday. Dr Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led committee had submitted its report to the government on June 29. The report includes suggestion for creating a separate governing council or an apex body to regulate medical education in the country.
The committee has also suggested putting a cap on fee for MBBS programs at Rs 3.5 million and limit MBBS quota for each medical college to not more than 100 seats. The report has called for merit-based admissions in both government as well as private medical colleges.
Dr KC has warned that he will not retreat from his demands and would not give up untill the government comes up with concrete proposal to address his demands.
Dr KC has also demanded that vacant positions of office bearers at all seven universities be appointed on the basis of seniority, as per the agreement signed between him and the government.
"Health and education institutions should be free of any kind of interference as future of the country depends upon them," added Dr KC.
