KATHMANDU, March 3: Nepali Congress (NC) senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba has asked party President Sushil Koirala not to bring in any agenda other than the peace process and constitution-drafting during the Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Thursday.

Deuba made the request during his meeting with Koirala as he prepares to leave for Singapore on Thursday for a health checkup, according to NC leader Gopal Man Shrestha. “Koirala has said that he would not bring up any agenda except the peace process and constitution-drafting at the central committee meeting,” said Shrestha.[break]

Deuba´s request comes amid apprehensions that NC President Koirala would choose to bring in the agenda of endorsing his nomination of Ram Chandra Paudel and Krishna Prasad Sitaula for party vice-president and general-secretart respectively during his absence. Earlier, Koirala´s bid to name Paudel and Sitaula as vice-president and general-secretary hit a snag after CWC members close to Deuba protested the decision, saying they should be given the post of vice-president or general-secretary to maintain balance within the body of party office bearers.

As per the party´s statute, the nomination of the party´s vice-president and general-secretary from among elected CWC members needs to be endorsed by CWC members elected through the general convention. Though Koirala has a comfortable majority in the CWC after nomination of the CWC members, Koirala and Deuba have an almost equal number of CWC members elected directly from the general convention in their respective folds.

NC President Koirala called the CWC meeting to make clear the party´s official position on various contentious issues that surfaced during the constitution-drafting process.

The CWC meeting scheduled to begin Thursday will debate issues over which the NC is at odds with other parties, especially the Maoists. There are some 75 issues in the constitution-drafting process including form of governance, judicial system, electoral system and type of legislative body over which the major political parties are yet to arrive at consensus.
