KATHMANDU, June 18: Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bamdev Gautam on Thursday expressed serious dissatisfaction over the role of international and local donors in carrying out relief distribution and rehabilitation work in the aftermath of the April 25 earthquake.

"It seems the entire world has become selfish. Generous donations are made when there is even a small disaster in other countries," CPN-UML Vice-chairman Gautam told a press meet at the party head office in Balkhu on Thursday. "But, Nepal couldn't receive enough support even when it faced a disaster of this scale."He also expressed dissatisfaction at the donors for hesitating to provide support through the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

Gautam, who visibly seemed irked, recounted a recent incident. "Soon after the earthquake, a noted businessperson came to me and expressed his desire to distribute foodstuff to the quake victims and asked me to suggest a remote area," Gautam told journalists. "We suggested to him to distribute foodstuff in Tatopani of Sindhupalchowk district. But, they didn't reach there even five days after the earthquake and they later told me that it was very difficult to reach there," he added.

Gautam also criticized some of the international organizations for not leaving Nepal even after the government thanked them and asked them to leave the country. "They are still here even as we have already thanked them," said Gautam.

According to him, various organizations weren't ready to distribute relief in the remote areas and as a result some places received more relief while people in far-flung areas received almost nothing.

He informed that the government has prepared its policies and plans for reconstructions and that it is for allowing other interested agencies to support the task in areas other than the historical and archeological heritage sites.
