LAHAN, June 18: Situation in Rajbiraj, the district headquarters of Saptari, became tense on Thursday after clashes between the police and activists of 10 political parties demanding release of three student leaders, who were arrested on the charge of thrashing the chief of a local campus.[break]
The situation, however, returned to normalcy after the District Court released the three student leaders -- Ramchandra Yadav, Jaya Prakash Yadav and Santosh Yadav -- on a general date. District Judge Ramesh Pokharel issued a release order of the students. The protesters however padlocked all government offices except the District Administration Office (DAO) and District Police Office.
Earlier, six individuals were injured and 12 arrested after police caned workers of 10 political parties who were trying to lock DAO. The injured were treated at Zonal Hospital in Rajbiraj.
The workers of 10 parties, who have joined hands to pile pressure for the release of three individuals arrested for beating the chief of Mahendra Bindeswori Campus in Rajbiraj, Devi Dutta Sah, last week, had reached the DAO to lock it from 11 am to 1 pm.
Workers of CPN-UML, UCPN-Maoist, Madhesi People’s Rights Forum, Sadbhavana Party, and others, are demanding immediate release of Free Students’ Union President Ramchandra Yadav, and his accomplices Prakash Yadav and Santosh Yadav, who face kidnapping charges.
All three are associated with Nepal Students’ Union. Interestingly, the Nepali Congress party has dissociated itself from the alliance that was forged to press for the release of the trio.
