KATHMANDU, Oct 28: Nepal’s weather is expected to be affected from Thursday by Cyclone Arnab, which has developed over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the chances of rain and snowfall will increase from Thursday night, with some areas at risk of heavy rainfall and snowfall on Friday and Saturday.

Meteorologists said the remnants of the cyclone, which is approaching the coastal areas of India’s Andhra Pradesh, could interact with westerly winds and an upper atmospheric weather system as they move towards Nepal, triggering rainfall.

The cyclone itself is not expected to enter Nepal directly, but the weather systems associated with it could affect the country.

Meteorologist Bibhuti Pokharel said the weather system originating in the Bay of Bengal could weaken by the time it reaches Nepal.

However, the amount of rainfall will depend on its speed, intensity and interaction with other weather systems. He said people should take necessary precautions in view of the rainfall forecast.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, rainfall is possible across many parts of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces. Some areas of these provinces could experience heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning on Friday and Saturday. Rainfall and snowfall are also forecast in various parts of Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces.

Heavy snowfall, snowstorms and avalanches are possible in high hill and Himalayan areas, requiring special precautions. Adverse weather could disrupt trekking, mountaineering and travel in high mountain regions.

Road transport and domestic flights could also face disruptions, depending on weather conditions. Travellers have been advised to check with the relevant authorities before setting out.

The forecast rainfall could also affect agriculture. As farmers are harvesting and bringing in paddy, they have been urged to protect ripe crops and harvested paddy left out to dry. Agricultural produce should be moved to safe storage wherever possible before the rain begins.

Heavy rainfall could raise water levels in rivers and streams and increase the risk of landslides in hilly areas. People living in vulnerable locations have been advised to remain alert. Tourists and trekkers travelling in high Himalayan areas should avoid risky journeys until weather conditions improve.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has also urged people to remain alert in view of the expected adverse weather between October 29 and 31.

As weather conditions may change, people have been advised to follow the latest forecasts and official notices issued by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology and make necessary preparations.
