Cricketer Maya Rawat awarded Martyr Dashrath Chand Award

KATHMANDU, July 1: Cricketer Maya Rawat of Kanchanpur was felicitated with Martyr Dashrath Chand Best Player Award in a ceremony in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

Minister for Youth and Sports Ganesh Nepali gave away the prize to Maya, who scored 117 runs for the national cricket team during their triumph at the ACC U-19 Women´s Cricket Tournament in December, 2008 in Thailand. [break]

Along with Maya, boxing players Anuradha Lama and Dipa Chhetri and judo players Sunita Magar, Saraswoti Thapa and Indira Rai were also awarded with the Martyr Dashrath Chand Medhavi Player awards.

Maya recieved Rs. 15,000 cash and certificate. She is currently in Malaysia to participate in the ACC Twenty20 Women´s Cricket Tournament. Other winners received Rs. 5,000 each.

The prize, established by the Shahid Dashrath Chand Memorial Trust, is awarded annually on the occasion of anniversary of Martyr Dashrath Chand.

Minister Nepali said only memory and honor to martyrs would make democracy sustainable while speaking  and added that political parties should focus on drafting new constitution on time as people elected them for the same purpose.

Former Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand said New Nepal could be envisaged by the memory of the martyrs and respects to the sportspersons.

The Trust informed that beginning from next year, it will also award the best photojournalist and best  sports journalist covering the sports related news.
