A third umpire was used for the first time in Nepal´s domestic cricket in the final of the Springwood T20 National Cricket Tournament at TU Cricket Ground on Friday. Though third umpire was used in Nepal on three occasions in international events, it´s the first time that third umpire has been used for domestic tournament. [break]
Field umpire Buddhi Bahadur Pradhan referred Kathmandu´s wicket-keeper Subash Khakurel´s stumping appeal against Bhairahawa batsman Akash Gupta to the third umpire. Durga Subedi, who was TV umpire for the match, showed green flag, a symbol for not out. Gupta then smashed next ball to the boundary, which was also referred to the third umpire by field umpire Basudev Lal Karna to decide whether it was a six or a four. Using a walkie-talkie, the TV umpire declared that it was a six.
This was the first time that a walkie-talkie was used in cricket in Nepal. NTV 2 footage was used for the help of the television umpire.
Mehboob felicitated
Mehboob Alam, who holds the record of taking 10 wickets in a single match, was felicitated a year after he made the record.
Mehboob took 10 wickets against Mozambique in the Cricket League Division V match on May 25, 2008. Alam took the wickets in 7.5-over spell conceding 12 runs with one maiden over.
Surya Nepal and Standard Chartered Bank each gave Rs 50,000 each to Alam. Nepali cricket´s governing body, Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), had awarded Alam Rs 50,000 last year.
Alam is the only bowler till date to scalp perfect 10 in international cricket outside test cricket. In test cricket, Jim Laker of England and Anil Kumble of India have achieved the rare feat.
Farewell to Sagar
Young cricketer Sagar Khadka bid adieu to Nepali cricket. He is flying to Australia for higher education for two years. He will do diploma in accountancy in Sydney.
Khadka couldn´t play in the T20 tournament final. His three-wicket haul in the semi-final played a vital role for Bhairahawa to go through to the final.
Sagar Khadka was a part of Nepal´s win in ACC U-15 in 2005 and ACC U-17. In his last match for Nepal, ACC U-19 final against Afghanistan, held in Malaysia, Khadka took two wickets and scored 32 runs.
