KATHMANDU, Feb 14: Speaker Agni Sapkota has said that his role in the ratification of the US-funded Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact Agreement through parliament is limited to an umpire.
Talking to media persons after an all-party meeting held on Monday, Speaker Sapkota said that political parties represented in parliament have a decisive role to play in the ratification of the MCC Compact Agreement through parliament. "I have been saying that my role is limited to an umpire. Political parties in parliament have a decisive role in this," he said.

Speaker Sapkota also said that he will not obstruct tabling the MCC Compact Agreement in parliament for discussion if there is a consensus among parties. "I am just an umpire in case of MCC agreement. I will not obstruct if there is consensus among political parties," he said.
Sapkota also expressed confidence that the obstruction in parliament would be lifted soon. "We have had a special meeting today. Leaders of major political parties will now take initiative to lift the obstruction in parliament," he further said.
The main opposition party, CPN-UML, has been obstructing parliament demanding resignation of parliament. The UML, however, had boycotted the all-party meeting called by Speaker Sapkota.
