KATHMANDU, June 28: CPN-Maoist Vice-Chairman CP Gajurel said on Friday the country will plunge into a fresh conflict if the new Constituent Assembly elections are not stopped and that his party will now have word with Nepal Army chief Gaurav Shumsher Rana to avert confrontration.

Speaking at a program at the Reporters Club Nepal in the capital, Gajurel said the four major political parties and the current Khil Raj Regmi government are bent on holding the elections even by mobilizing the army. “We will talk to Chief of Army Staff Gaurav Shumsher Rana and ask him if the army only belongs to the four parties,” he said. Stating that elections are a political phenomenon, the Maoist leader said the new elections can´t be held with a sheer use of armed force nor can those unwilling for the elections be coaxed into taking part in the vote. He warned that if the new elections are imposed using the army, his party will, as a counter measure, boycott the vote by ‘actively mobilizing’ the people.

He said there is no point holding talks with the four major parties unless the parties are ready to scrap the 11-point and 25-point agreements, discontinue with the current Khil Raj Regmi government and postpone the November 19 elections. He also ruled out any talks with the parties in the future if they miss to invite his party for talks by Friday night.

Gajurel argued that a new constitution is not possible in the existing situation. He also ruled out any possibility of merger with the mother party, UCPN (Maoist) and went to say his party is in talks with three other communist parties for party unification.
