Community forest-supported schools in trouble

ILAM, Dec 21: Local schools operated from the income of forests have been in trouble after the government imposed ban on the extraction of forest products from community forests.



Number of schools of Southern ilam have witnessed financial problem following the government´s move to check the sale and smuggling of forest timbers for a long time.[break]



With the stoppage of forest income, teachers serving the schools operated on private resources have not been provided with their remuneration and allowances while local development works depended on the forest support have also been affected.



Among the schools operated from the forest resources are 19 in Danabari Village Development Committee (VDC), 15 in Mahamai VDC and four in Chisapani VDC of Ilam district.



Around 115 community forests here have been banned to generate income by the sale of forest products.



The government has strictly banded the extraction of forest products from the community forests in 24 districts from July 8, 2010 citing rampant deforestation.
