Cold-related illnesses rise in capital

KATHMANDU, Dec 18: Severe drop in temperature has led to a surge in the number children suffering from cold-related ailments in the capital. Kanti Children Hospital, the only referral center for ailing children in the country, has reported massive rise in the number of children suffering from cold-related illnesses in last few days.

"Cases of winter diarrhea, common cold, acute bronchiolitis, cough, pneumonia have gone up significantly in the hospital," Dr Ganesh Rai of the Kanti Children Hospital said.

He informed that a majority of ailing children are from the family of earthquake victims. Dr Rai, however, said that the hospital does not maintain a record of whether the patients belong to a quake-hit family or not, but said that most of the patients were from the valley and adjoining districts hit hard by the devastating earthquake.

According to Dr Rai, parents should rush their children immediately if their health worsen. The Child Health Division (CHD) under the department of Health Services (DoHS) has urged all parents to protect their children from cold and take necessary precautionary measures. "We request all parents to protect their children from cold," Dr Krishna Prasad Poudel, director at the CHD said.


He concedes that a lot of quake victims are more at risk of suffering from cold-related illnesses and their children are even more vulnerable to the problem. "Parents of small children should be extra cautious about their health," said Dr Poudel. He asked all the people to ensure that their children are fully immunized and kept warm.
