KATHMANDU, June 21: Come November, and film and art fanatics are in for a special treat. Documentary Open Skool (Docskool) is organizing a four-day cine carnival beginning November 19.

The event entitled The Nepal Cine Symposium (NCS) 2011 is calling in for applicants to file in their submissions for workshops, art events, and master classes alongside a film festival. The submission deadline has been set for the end of August 2011.[break]

The aims and objectives of the symposium, according to the organizers, is “to create a platform of cinematic sharing and understanding between the countries of South Asia and the rest of the world.

” The four core categories the event has been divided into the following:

Something like a film festival: This part of the symposium will have non-stop film screenings.

The organization is currently collecting films from various international film schools and South Asian and Nepali filmmakers.

The festival, held for the first time in Nepal, will be screening Queer films: films related to lesbians, gays, transsexuals and transvestites.

Also, at the festival, two Nepali short films will be given audience choice awards. “The screening of films will be of advantage to the makers because there will be international cinema people marking their presence,” asserted Kshitiz Adhiraj, festival director of NCS.

Short film factory pitch 2011: This section of the symposium is asking local filmmakers to pitch in their ideas.

“This is the first time film pitching is taking place in Nepal,” claimed Adhiraj, adding “we aren’t looking for perfect stories but something creative and something never been done before.”

The selected film of this section will have the movie screened at the festival and also be rewarded with a prize money to make a full-length feature.

Workshop/Seminars/Master Classes: This part of NCS will have lecturers from international schools as well as workshops conducted by international media houses.

These classes, according to Adhiraj, will have students getting trained on not only the basic concepts on cinema making but on complete film production.

Self-Designed Events: At the symposium, you’re allowed to organize your own events. Whether it’s Outdoor Screenings, Art Installations, Workshops, Exhibitions, Interactive Art Experiments, Art Bazaar – you get to do it all.

“We want the event to be a forum between cinema and art lovers,” said Adhiraj.
