CIAA returns EC documents

KATHMANDU, May 19: Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has returned the documents it took last week from Election Commission (EC) over alleged misappropriation while procuring laptop computers and other equipments meant for issuing voters´ identity cards.



The anti-graft body has pointed some technical as well as procedural errors on part of the EC while procuring the logistics and suggested the EC to rectify them. The CIAA, however, has not found any misappropriation in the procurement deal.



The EC had procured 1,000 set of laptops, scanners, web cameras and related equipments and 900 sets of generators with 1 KVA capacity in order to distribute voters´ identity cards in various 19 districts, including 16 districts in remote hilly districts, by mid-July.



Addressing a press meet on Wednesday, Chief Election Commissioner-nominate Neel Kantha Uprety said the EC had invited tender for procurement of logistics in order to ensure transparency though Election Commission Act (Article 16 (1) and (2) allows the EC to procure them on its own. He said the EC has already directed its secretariat to begin fresh process to procure necessary logistics.
