China pledges support for holding CA elections

Kathmandu, June 24: China also pledged support to fresh Constituent Assembly elections slated for November 19.



During a bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister Madhav Prasad Ghimire, visiting Chinese State Councilor, Yang Jiechi, on Monday, reiterated for the Chinese support for holding fresh CA election.[break]



According to Arjun Bahadur Thapa, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who was also present in the meeting, said that Yang committed China’s support on holding fresh CA elections.



“Yang said that the government of China welcomes Nepal’s preparations to hold elections and ready to support for the constitution drafting process in the near future,” Thapa said after the meeting.



While welcoming to the Chinese top dignitaries Minister Ghimire thanked to the Chinese government for ongoing supports on Nepal’s economic development.



“Yang thanked to the Nepalese side for its firm stance on one-china policy and in regard to security matters,” Thapa said.



During the meeting, the Nepalese side asked for financial assistance to some development projects including the West Seti Project and Ring Road expansion. Minister Ghimire also asked to Yang for more air and railway connectivity between the two countries.



“We are serious regarding Nepal’s request providing financial support on various projects. I would forward Nepal’s request to the high authorities in my country,” Thapa quoted to Jeichi as saying during the meeting.



Chinese State Councilor Jiechi arrived in Kathmandu on a two-day official visit, on Monday afternoon.



Yang is the top Chinese official visiting Nepal since the new leadership under Li Keqiang assumed office in China last March. He is also in-charge of the China´s foreign affairs. Sources at the foreign ministry said he would pay a courtesy call on Vice President Parmananda Jha on Tuesday.



Similarly, the Chinese official will meet Chairman of the Election Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi at the latter´s office in Singha Durbar the same day.



Sources at the MOFA confirmed that two agreements will be signed during his visit. There will be an agreement related to Chinese assistance to the Election Commission and another for constructing an Armed Police Force (APF) training academy, sources said.



State Councilor Yang will inaugurate the opening ceremony of the Ring Road improvement project on Tuesday morning, officials said.
