KATHMANDU, March 23: A meeting of the Constitutional Committee’s (CC) Dispute Resolution Subcommittee on Friday ended without any progress after opposition leaders showed reluctance to move forward without concrete progress in peace process.

Leaders of Nepali Congress and CPN-UML said that it was worthless to discuss major issues for the new constitution without tangible progress in peace process. [break]

At the start of the meeting, Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai had debriefed the subcommittee that the Special Committee for integration on Thursday had asked the secretariat to come up with a concrete model for integration and urged to discuss disputed issues on new constitution.

“Unless there is progress in peace process, it’s not useful to discuss on constitution,” NC leader Ramesh Lekhak said after the meeting. “We’ll first see what the secretariat comes up with and move forward accordingly.”

During the meeting, Speaker Subas Nembang reminded the leaders of the timeframe to draft new constitution and urged to resolve disputed issues as soon as possible.

UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, NC parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudel and other leaders attended the meeting.
