KATHMANDU, Aug 15: Three major political parties – UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML — have decided to request the Constituent Assembly (CA) Chairman Subash Nembang to postpone the scheduled election of the Constitutional Committee (CC) chairperson.

A meeting of the three political parties held at the prime minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Saturday took a decision to this effect. The parties decided to postpone the election, scheduled for Monday, to reach consensus on the name to head the committee.

“We have decided to ask the CA chair to postpone the election so that we can reach consensus on the name of the CC head,” said Maoist Vice Chairman Narayankaji Shrestha, who participated in the meeting.

The UCPN (Maoist) has already decided to field its Vice Chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai in the election, while the Nepali Congress has also decided to fight the election though the party is yet to come up with its official candidate. The UML has decided not to field any candidate for the post.

The post of the CC chairman has remained vacant after then chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal was elected to the post of the prime minister on May 23.
