LAHAN, July 31: The District Red Cross, Siraha, has launched an awareness campaign in the VDCs vulnerable to floods. The week-long downpour in the northern part of the district has made 27 VDCs in the district highly vulnerable to floods.

Ashok Upadhyaya, a member of Siraha Red Cross, said that the campaign was launched to educate people about safety measures to be taken during floods. According to him, 27 VDCs in the district are at high risk of floods. Similarly, 41 VDCs are at medium risk and 40 VDCs are less vulnerable to floods.

Four people were killed in the floods in 2007. The floods had displaced as many as 4,086 families, while 10,000 families had incurred heavy losses in terms of property.

Each VDC will now be active in providing rescue support to flood-hit areas. Rescue squads have been asked to stay on high alert in places like Aurahi, Itatar, Lagadi, Gadayaani, Majhauliya, Bhediya, Pterawa and Thengi.

Information centers have also been set up in eight VDCs to facilitate rescue operations.
