KATHMANDU, Oct 28: Chief Election Commissioner Neel Kantha Uprety on Monday claimed that the Constituent Assembly (CA) election scheduled for November 19 will be conducted peacefully.

The statement of the chief election commissioner comes at a time when incidents of violence related to electoral process are being reported from various districts.

“The polls will be held peacefully. Please be confident about that,” said Uprety, while addressing media persons in the capital.[break]

“The commission´s plane with 425,000 passengers and crew members has already taken off and it will definitely land safely,” said Uprety drawing a parallel between an aircraft and the EC´s operations.

Asked if the commission is satisfied with the security arrangements made by the government, the chief election commissioner maintained that the efforts being made by the government is praiseworthy.

“Candidates, voters and political parties should also be conscious about their security,” added the chief election commissioner.

He said the EC has been moving ahead as per the calendar of events introduced by the commission.

“The commission has not left even a single stone unturned for the forthcoming CA election,” Uprety said. Stating that the EC has already printed 15 million ballot papers for the proportional electoral system, the chief election commissioner said they will accomplish the printing of ballot papers for the first-past-the-post (FPTP) electoral system by Wednesday.

Election Commissioner Ila Sharma said the country and the commission is ready to face any situation in order to hold the CA polls.

“The CA election, which is as per people´s wish, will be held at any cost and there can be by-election at many locations if necessary,” she said, “The EC is fully committed and determined to hold the polls.”

Saying that it is not a periodic election, Sharma urged media sector help make the CA election a success.
