B'desh support to Nepal quake victims

KATHMANDU, May 3: The Bangladesh government has dispatched various relief materials, including tents, biscuits, bandages and ready-made garments, to the earthquake victims in Nepal .

According to a press statement issued by the Embassy of Bangladesh in Kathmandu on Sunday, altogether 761 tents, 700 tins of biscuits, 3500 liters of bottled drinking water, 6700 kg of medicines, 90 kg of cotton, 45 kg of bandages, 22 cartons of ready-made garments and 1,300 pieces of blankets arrived so far in Kathmandu for quake victims.These relief materials have been sent to Kathmandu by special Bangladesh Air Force Flight on April 26, May 1 and May 3, 2015. A 30-member medical team of Bangladesh Army also arrived on 26 April and has been working in Bhaisepati, Lalitpur since 27 April morning.

According to the statement, the embassy has also been working with several private organizations and has distributed relief materials in Lalitpur and Dhulikhel as well as several villages in Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot and Gorkha. The children of the embassy officials have formed volunteer groups and have been distributing relief materials to earthquake victims staying in camps.

A number of non-government organizations from Bangladesh, including BRAC (Bangladesh Rural Advancement Council), one of the largest NGOs in Bangladesh, has been providing humanitarian assistance to victims of the earthquake in several localities outside the Kathmandu Valley, the embassy said.

Various Bangladeshi private organizations including Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB), members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh are also involved in relief efforts.
