DATTU (Darchula), July 1: Although the government decided to construct a diversion along the flood-damaged Baitadi-Darchula road to resume transport service there by mid-July, no efforts have been made so far to reconstruct the damaged road.

The recent devastating flood in the Mahakali River on July 17 had damaged the Baitadi-Darchula Highway at ten different places cutting off Darchula from Baitadi and leaving hundreds of people stranded there. [break]

On June 28, a meeting of secretaries of various ministries had decided to construct a five-kilometer long diversion to resume transport service between the two districts.

Although the government two weeks after the flood announced that transport service resumed along Baitadi-Darchula road, much of the road is still in bad condition and too risky for travel, according to locals.

“After the flood, the road has become too dangerous. We have been risking our lives while travelling along the damaged road,” said Shankar Singh Saud, a truck driver whom Republica met at Dattu of Darchula.

The distance of the Baitadi-Darchula road is 126 kilometer. “Only 110 kilometers section of the road is in the good condition,” said Dinkar Sharma, director general of the DRD.
