Badminton team leaves for Malaysia today

KATHMANDU, June 21: A six-member Nepali badminton team, including four youth players, is leaving for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Saturday to participate in a training camp and compete in an Asian youth tournament.[break]



The players -- Dipesh Dhami, Bijeet Thapa, Shiksha Shrestha and Shreya Pradhan -- will take part in the two-week-long BAC U-19 Training Camp organized by the Badminton Confederation of Asia (BCA) from June 23 to July 7 in Kuala Lumpur. The players will be accompanied by coach Meghraj Kathayat and Nepal Badminton Association member Chandra Shekhar Lama.



After completion of the training, the players will participate in the Badminton Asia Youth U-19 Asian Championship to be held from July 7 to 15 in Sabah, Malaysia. Nepal will compete in the mixed team championship and individual categories of the championship to be held in round-robin league format, informed Nepal Badminton Association General Secretary Ramji Bahadur Awal.



In the mixed section, Nepal will field one player each in men´s singles and women´s singles and one team each in the men´s doubles, women´s doubles and mixed doubles events.



National Sports Council Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama bade farewell to the team amidst a function on Friday and wished them success. He also suggested to the players to utilize the training opportunity from BCA saying it could be helpful during the tournament.
