Athletics team leaves for Pune today

KATHMANDU, June 26: A five-member Nepali athletics team is leaving for Pune, India on Thursday to participate in the 20th Asian Athletics Championship.



The Nepali team constitutes two male players, two female players and a coach.



Keshari Chaudhary will represent Nepal in women´s triple jump and 100 meters hurdles at the championship to be held from July 3 to 7. She is the national record holder in both the events.



Similarly, Dil Maya Karki will compete in the women´s 400 meters race.

In the men´s section, sprinter Tilak Ram Tharu will compete in the men´s 100 meters and 200 meters races. Tharu holds the national record in 200 meters.



Another Nepali athlete Kalyan Baniya will compete in the men´s 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters races.

Rakesh Bajracharya is the coach of the Nepali team.



National Sports Council Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama bade farewell to the team on Wednesday and wished them success.

During the farewell function, Lama urged the players to focus on their performances and not worry about the problems facing the Nepal Athletics Association (NAA).



"The National Sports Council is always positive about Nepal´s participation in international tournaments. As players you all should concentrate on your performances instead of the association´s problems," he said.

Lama also informed that talks were underway to end the NAA dispute.
