KATHMANDU, July 14: Nepali national Tilak Bahadur Thapa Magar, who had been serving a 20-year jail term in a prison in Afghanistan since the last two years, was set free Sunday after Afghan President Hamid Karzai granted him amnesty.

Earlier in May this year, the Nepali embassy in Pakistan, also concurrently accredited to Afghanistan, had handed over a letter from Nepal’s the-then prime minister Baburam Bhattarai to the Afghan president, requesting him for clemency for Thapa Magar. [break]

“It has been possible to secure Thapa Magar’s release withe exemption from the rest of his imprisonment term, following the Nepal government head’s request and our rigorous diplomatic efforts,” the Nepali embassy in Pakistan said in a press statement today.

Stating that the two South Asian countries enjoy cordial bilateral relations, the embassy said it is appreciative of the Afghan president and his government granting clemency to Thapa Magar on humanitarian grounds. He has left from Afghan capital, Kabul for Kathmandu today. Thapa Magar hails from Bandipur-5 of Tanahun district.

He had been arrested on April 19, 2011 from Helmand Province of Afghanistan. A court in Helmand had convicted Thapa Magar for espionage and handed him 16 years in prison. The Afghan supreme court had increased the sentence by four more years, later.
