Two children from Devi Lal´s neighborhood, Sagara Sarki (13) and Jagdish Sarki (5), also died in the incident. They, too, were sleeping at Devi Lal´s house.

Hari Datta Sarki (18) and Tanka Sarki (18), residents of Tatopani VDC-3 of Jumla, who were taking shelter at Devi Lal´s house to appear in the SLC exams from a Badki-based exam centre, were also among the dead.

Devi Lal, who survived the calamity along with his youngest son Kamal Sarki (5), has sustained serious injuries. Bhanu Sarki (20) and Shiva Dutta Sarki (18), residents of Tatopani VDC-9, who were also there to appear in the exams, have also sustained injuries.

While Kamal is undergoing treatment at a local health center, three others have been taken to Karnali Health Sciences Academy and Teaching Hospital (KHSATH), Jumla for further treatment.

Badki VDC is along the Nagma-Gamgadhi road, an extension of Karnali Highway that links Mugu district with Jumla. It takes a four-hour walk from Nagma, a small bazaar of Jumla located along the Karnali Highway, to reach Badki VDC.

According to DSP Rakesh Singh, chief of District Police Office (DPO) of Jumla, Devi Lal´s house was almost completely buried under the landslide. The four injured, including Devi Lal, had been rescued from under the debris.

A team that included inspector Yogendra Hamal of the Jumla DPO and Dr Ramesh Rasaili of the KHSATH reached Badki Thursday to conduct postmortem of the dead in the village.

According to Purna Bahadur Shahi, a local resident of Badki VDC, Devi Lal´s house that stood on the slope of a hill was very poorly-built and could not withstand the pressure of the landslide. "The landslide was not strong," he said. "But the house collapsed just after being hit by the landslide; and was soon buried under the debris."

Meanwhile, three people who gathered around the debris of Devi Lal´s house were injured in a stampede triggered by rumor of another landslide. While Hari Sarki, 15, of Tatopani VDC-3, is in normal condition, Khadka Bahadur Rokaya (24), of Kalikakhetu VDC-4, and Padam Nath Yogi, 26, of Badki VDC-5, are seriously injured.

The landslide has also killed Devi Lal´s seven cows, five goats and 11 chickens, said the police.

Meanwhile, an emergency meeting of District Disaster Relief Committee of Jumla Thursday decided to provide Rs 40,000 each to the families of the deceased.
