CHITWAN, March 9: As many as 17 rhinos have died in Chitwan National Park (CNP) and nearby areas since mid-July, officials said. While one rhino died from electrocution, the rest died of natural causes.
A total of 57 wild animals have died in the park this fiscal year. Abinash Thapa Magar, CNP’s information officer, said the toll includes four tigers, three elephants, 18 chitals, two each of leopards, jackals, mugger crocodiles, and gharials, and one each of a python and a golden jackal, along with four other species.

Most deaths were due to natural causes such as getting trapped in marshes, fights, accidents, or predator attacks. Thapamagar noted that increased community awareness has helped reduce poaching. Last fiscal year, 81 wild animals were reported dead in the park.
