BAGLUNG, July 6: The Baglung District Court on Tuesday sentenced 17 cadres of National People´s Front (NPF) to four years in prison and a fine of Rs 50,000 each.

Concluding that the NPF cadres, including its chairman Amar Thapa, held the Nepali Congress cadres hostage just one day before the Constituent Assembly (CA) election in 2008 in Tamgram VDC, the single bench of judge Rameshwarnath Upadhyaya issued a sentence to that effect. The case was filed by Chandra Bahadur Thapa.

NPF cadres Durga Bahadur Thapa, Tul Bahadur Thapa, Dhamal Thapa, Laxman Pun, Bhim Bahadur Julmi, Girija Prasad Pun, Dhan Prasad Pun, Jeet Bahadur Pun, Mohan BK, Hari Thapa, Om Bahadur Pun, Bhim Bahadur Thapa and Hari Bahadur Thapa have been awarded the jail sentence.

NPF cadres, however, were not present during the court hearing. The NPF has been alleging that its cadres were also held hostage by NC cadres prior to the CA polls. NPF Chairman Thapa commenting on the court verdict said the verdict was biased. He said he would appeal against the verdict in higher courts.
