KATHMANDU, April 14: The Metropolitan Police raided Casino Star at Hyatt Hotel, Casino Royal at Yak and Yeti and Casino Anna at Annapurana Hotel and arrested 12 Nepalis on the charge of gambling. Gambling Act 1963 restricts Nepali nationals from entering into casinos for the purpose of gambling.

According to the Metropolitan Office Range Hanumandhoka, the police raided Casino Royal and Casino Anna at 3:00 pm and arrested five persons from the former and six from the latter. A team deployed by the Metropolitan Police Circle Office Baudha arrested a Nepali citizen and seized Rs 45,000 from his possession. The police seized casino chips and cash amounting to Rs 200,000 from the two casinos.[break]

Despite frequent raids, the entry of Nepali gamblers has not stopped, SSP Rana Bahadur Chand, chief of Metropolitan Police Range Office Kathmandu said.

He said that until stricter rules against gambling are imposed, Nepali gamblers will continue to enter casinos. First time casino-goers can escape police custody after paying a fine of Rs 200.

Aiming to prevent Nepalis from entering casinos, the police had begun collecting the details of the staff and owners of casino.

But half of the casinos in the capital have still not complied with the police instructions to submit the identity details of the owners and employees, even after repeated deadlines given to them have expired.

Many casinos reportedly provide fake ownership certificates and staff identity cards to Nepali gamblers to facilitate their entry. Some casinos have submitted details of huge number of employees, a police at MPRO said, which has left them puzzled
