12 cops hurt in clash with locals

KATHMANDU, July 11: A clash with locals, who wanted to take a hold over an Indian national accused of rape attempt on minor, left 12 policemen injured at Lokanthali, Bhaktapur, on Saturday afternoon.

Pramod Shah of Motihari, India, a scrap-collector, had allegedly tried to drag a seven-year-old daughter of his landlord into his room. The landlord family then called the police and handed him over to the police.

According to a police officer at Metropolitan Police Sector, Thimi, locals intervened as the police were about to take the accused away.

Around 2,000 people gathered and some of them tried to snatch the accused away from the police´s CRV van. Police used some tear gas shells and resorted to baton-charge to disperse the mob.

Twelve policemen including DSP Kiran Bajracharya sustained injuries from stones pelted by the crowd.
