Data of other serious crimes and suicide over one year released

KATHMANDU, March 29: Data reveals that an average of 7 individuals lose their lives every day in Nepal due to traffic accidents. According to the data of Nepal Police, it is seen that seven fatalities occur due to traffic accidents across Nepal everyday.

During a press briefing organized by Nepal Police, Central Police Spokesperson Bhim Prasad Dhakal presented the statistics, indicating that 65 vehicle accidents take place daily, resulting in 83 injuries. Looking at the road data, it appears that there are 77,302.68 km of roads in Nepal. Stating that there are 6,238,301 vehicles registered in Nepal and the number of traffic police is 2,770, he said that one traffic police person has to oversee 2,252 vehicles.

Furthermore, Dhakal disclosed that over the past year, traffic police have collected fines totaling Rs 1.87 billion and the traffic police have taken action against a total of 2,431,593 individuals.

Police said that 59,061 cases were registered from March 24, 2023 to March 13, 2024. It is said that the highest number of 17,397 crime cases have been registered in the districts of Kathmandu Valley. Only 1,965 cases of crime have been registered in Karnali Province.

According to Central Police Spokesperson Dhakal, 13,277 cases of banking offenses have been registered across the country. He said that 21,197 incidents related to women and children have been registered. Of which, 16,741 complaints of domestic violence have been registered and 8,349 of these complaints have been resolved.

According to the police, only 2,468 cases of rape were registered in the said period. Police Spokesperson Dhakal said that most crimes related to women and children were registered in Madhesh Province.

Similarly, 7,194 cases of suicide have been registered in one year. The highest number of 1,530 incidents have been registered in Koshi Province.

A total of 5,150 serious crimes such as kidnapping and extortion, forced labor, human trafficking and rape have been registered.

The police said that the highest number of such incidents were registered in Koshi Province at 1,066 and the lowest at 312 in Gandaki Province. Similarly, 4,284 illegal drugs related cases were registered and 6,508 defendants were arrested.

Nepal Police reported 212 electronic crimes and cyber crimes committed through various social networks and electronic means have been registered. According to the police, 149 cases related to irregularities in cooperatives were registered across the country and 271 defendants were arrested. As many as 1,110 defendants in various cooperative cases are absconding.
