KATHMANDU, March 7:  The 'Late Babu Chiri Sherpa Open Sport Climbing Competition’ is going to be organized for the first time at Crimpanzee Adventure Hub located in Bauddha.

During a press conference held on Thursday at Crimpanzee Adventure Hub, Ngwang Nima Sherpa, the president of Alpine Sports Association INC, announced that the competition is scheduled for March 14.

Sherpa revealed details of the event, which is jointly organized by the Alpine Sports Association and Everest Summiteers Association.

"Our goal is to positively impact the adventure sports industry and enhance the development of climbing as a sport in Nepal through the participation of athletes," stated President Sherpa.

Sherpa, president of the Alpine Sports Association INC, said that the Alpine Sports Association-North America-Nepal was formed in New York with the aim of promoting adventure mountain sports at the international level. He said that this kind of competition will help to promote adventure mountain sports.

Maya Sherpa, president of the Everest Summiteers Association, said in the program that 'Late Babu Chiri Sherpa' was a climber who heold several world records and that his contribution should be remembered. Maya Sherpa said, "There are no competitions to make the record-breaking mountaineer memorable, so we are going to do it in his memory." She said that the competition will be held every year.

The Nepal National Mountaineering Instructors Association will provide technical support (route setting, judging, safety, and belay service) to this competition. The competition will be held separately for men and women. Cash prizes of fifty thousand, thirty thousand and fifteen thousand will be given to the first, second and third place in the competition.

Late Babu Chiri Sherpa is considered the greatest mountaineer ever. Sherpa is known as the strongest climber of the mountain and the world's most famous mountaineer who has reached the summit of Everest for the 10th time (including four times from China).

He managed to set two world records on Mount Everest by spending more than 21 hours on the summit of Mount Everest without oxygen in the spring winter (still a record) and by climbing Mount Everest from the south side in the fastest time of 16 hours and 56 minutes.

Unfortunately, he died on April 29, 2001 while attempting to ascend Mount Everest for the 11th time.
