Aussie opener Hayden announces retirement

KATHMANDU, Jan 13: Australia´s most successful opening batsman Matthew Hayden announced his retirement from international cricket at the Gabba, Brisbane Tuesday, cricinfo.com reported.



Hayden, who was dropped from the limited-overs squads last Thursday, had initially hoped to quit after the Ashes, but confirmed his retirement on Tuesday morning.



He will be given a public farewell at tonight´s Twenty20 international (between Australia and South Africa) at the Gabba, where he will appear at the innings break.



Hayden said his retirement was from all representative cricket, effective immediately. He said it was a call he had not taken lightly, and it was ultimately his decision. He reached his decision on Saturday and said he had no concerns about what was to come in the next stage of his life.
