The fifth round of prime ministerial poll has been slated for August 18 after both the candidates —Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and NC Vice-President Ram Chandra Poudel — failed to secure a majority (301 votes) in the previous rounds.

Though today´s meeting showed a new possibility of dialogues between the two parties for consensus, no concrete agreement could be reached, said NC spokesman Arjun Narsingh KC.

Maoist Vice President Narayan Kaji Shrestha, who was also present in the meeting, said it would be appropriate to form a new government under Maoist leadership. "If that does not happen, we have proposed three alternatives," he said.

The three Maoist alternatives include formation of a new government under Dahal´s leadership, holding discussions on national issues before August 18 (if the first proposal is not acceptable) and withdrawal of candidacies of both Dahal and Poudel if environment is created for formation of a national government.

With the parties competing for the prime ministerial post returning to talks, political leaders expressed hopes for a national consensus before the fifth round of election.

Meanwhile, CPN-UML Secretary Yuvaraj Gyawali told RSS that his party will intensify talks with the two big parties and stay neutral if consensus is not forged before August 18.
