Chitwan banda enters day VIII

CHITWAN, March 9: Normal life in Chitwan district remained affected on the eighth consecutive day Monday due to banda (general strike) called by the Tharu community.



Three people -- two protestors and a police -- were earlier killed in protests in Chitwan after the Tharu community started protesting their categorization as Madhesi.



Demonstrators from the agitating Tharu community started protests here at Aptari area since early in the morning. They have prohibited vehicular movement in the area.



The Tharu community has also started protesting at Pulchowk in Narayanghat in the district.



Demonstrations have also started at Madi, Jagatpur, Meghauli and Gitanagar, among other places in the western part of the district. Tharu demonstrators have also started demonstrating at several rural areas in the district.



People in Tandi, Bhandara, Nipanichowk and Bhanuchowk, among other places, in eastern Chitwan are facing shortage of daily commodities due to the strike. Vehicular movement has remained totally paralyzed on Monday as well. Locals said people have started entering bordering Indian markets to buy essential goods.



The protestors vandalized two vehicles including an ambulance at Dibypuri in Nawalparasi district Sunday night.



Police have arrested Amar Karki, 21, Buddhi Ram Mahato, 18, and Nir Prasad Mahato, 21, in connection with the vandalism, according to District Police Office, Nawalparasi. Another truck (Na3Kha 4045) was vandalized at Rajahar area in Nawalparasi Sunday night.
