GORKHA, April 24: Five years have shot by since a major earthquake hit Nepal. Gorkha -- the epicenter of the earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale -- was almost completely destroyed by that earthquake in April 2015. Five years since that day, Gorkha now wears a different look.
GORKHA, Mar 1: Demanding a permanent solution to the dilapidated and dusty roads, the locals of Nayasaghu, Siranchowk Rural Municipality of Gorkha have taken to the streets. In recent days, they have been demonstrating on the street against Nagarjun Trishuli JV Construction Company which is responsible for repairing and blacktopping the Barhakilo–Barpak road section. The blacktopping was supposed to be completed last year but it is not near completion yet. On Friday, the locals even blocked the road for sometime as a symbolic protest against the poor road condition.
GORKHA, Feb 23: The registration of cottage industries in Gorkha district has increased significantly after the local government decided to carry out strict inspection on businesses. The local government has also put forth a provision which makes registration compulsory to receive subsidy. From mid-July to mid-January of the current fiscal year, 575 hotels and restaurants were registered with the Cottage and Small Industry of Gorkha.
GORKHA, Feb 13: The national pride project, Budhigandaki Hydropower Project, has distributed a total of Rs 28.18 billion to acquire private land. According to the project officials, the amount for the acquisition of 45,777 ropani of land in Gorkha and Dhading districts belonging to 21,159 households has been released.

GORKHA, Dec 2: Locals of Doyal and Payau villages in Gorkha have demanded resettlement in safer zone following high risk of landslides in the hills. Recurring landslides since the devastating earthquake of 2015 have already displaced a dozen families in those villages. And the fear not only persists, it has actually aggravated as the hills look more fragile and landslides have been more frequent.
GORKHA, Nov 22: Locals and elected representatives staged protests in front of the Dhading and Gorkha district administration offices (DAOs) on Thursday, demanding that the compensation for the land to be acquired for the construction of the Budhigandadki Hydropower Project be determined at the earliest.
GORKHA, Sept 9: A total of 490 schools in Gorkha, which were damaged by the devastating earthquake of 2015, have now received new or repaired buildings. According to Bishnu Prasad Mishra, chief of the project implementation unit in Gorkha, rooms that were partially or fully damaged have been rebuilt.

GORKHA, July 31: The blacktopping of a 30-kilometer stretch of a road in Bapark has come to a standstill as the road project office scrapped the agreement with the contractor, Nagarjun/Trishuli JV, citing extreme negligence in work. The stretch covers one-fourth of the Barhakilo–Barpak road.
GORKHA, June 18: The asphalt on the road from Katusghari to Baguwachhetra in Gorkha district that was blacktopped only a month ago has come off. Of the 10.2 km stretch of the road, only 4.2 km has been constructed so far.

However, the locals fondly talk about the Barpak that is etched on their minds even as tremors continue to remind them of the calamity that changed their lives.
The justice system has had a checkered past in Nepal. The chieftain of Gorkha is publicly celebrated for administering victors’ justice to the vanquished. For over hundred years, the word of not just one ruler but the entire Rana clan was the law. There was a brief interregnum in the 1950s when judges and lawyers imported from India tried to establish a semblance of rule of law. However, darkness soon enveloped as not just the speech but even wishes of Shah Kings became tantamount to supreme law.
GORKHA, March 30: The government has decided to construct a Bailey bridge to help Pappu Construction, notorious for leaving many infrastructure projects incomplete, complete a bridge project across the Trishuli River, that will join Chitwan's Ichhyakamana Rural Municipality and Gorkha's Gandaki Rural Municipality.

Issuing a statement here Wednesday, the group's district member Anil Kumal, youth member Gokul Kumal and area committee member Meghraj Kumal announced abandoning the group.
GORKHA, March 24: As soon as he assumed office in September 2015, Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli made a promise to replace all the improvised cable crossings known as tuin in the country would be replaced with suspension bridges. He said that tuins, which putt people’s lives at risk, would become extinct within two years.
GORKHA, Mar 1: The District Coordination Committee (DCC) of Gorkha has made an attempt to stop the rampant extraction of construction materials from its rivers. Following complaints from various quarters about the use of heavy equipment in the extraction, the DCC has fixed time for such activities.
