KATHMANDU, March 30: The entire world is presently battling to contain the spread of coronavirus, termed as COVID-19 by the World Health Organisation. The virus which first emerged from Wuhan of Hubei province in China has already taken a pandemic turn. Bearing in mind the global health threat posed by it, several countries have gone into lockdown, as a precautionary measure against the deadly virus. In this connection, the Government of Nepal also announced a weeklong national lockdown beginning from March 24, which was extended Sunday to last till April 7. The extension was as per the Cabinet meeting decision acting on the recommendation of the High-level Task Force on Coronavirus Infection Prevention, Control, and Treatment headed by Deputy Prime Minister Ishwar Pokhrel.

The Covid-19 has now become a reality for Nepal. Until Monday, Nepal had only one positive (and a recovered) case. Now another person, who recently returned from France, has been tested positive and she is undergoing treatment at Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, Teku. With this, panic level among people has sharply increased. Perhaps considering the seriousness of the case after this incident, the government on Monday enforced complete lockdown of the country. It is clear that the government had to announce this drastic measure after the appeal to the people to stay home, not to travel and thus take care of themselves went in vain. The curfew-like situation that has started from Tuesday morning has worked considerably well. Streets are empty and vehicles are not seen on the streets.  But this, it seems, is true only in the main streets of the valley. Outside of the Ring Road and in inner streets, people don’t seem to care about the lockdown.

KHOTANG, March 25: Jantedhunaga Municipality of Khotang has urged 40 people who recently returned home from different parts of India to self-quarantine. They had visited local health desks for confirmation whether they are infected with the novel coronavirus. According to Pawan Pokharel, health department coordinator of the rural municipality, they looked normal and did not have symptoms of fever or cough. “So they have been sent home. They have been advised to observe self-quarantine for 14 days and are under our monitoring,” he said.
