KATHMANDU, Feb 17: Youths on Wednesday turned to blowing whistles to draw the attention of the political parties to reach a consensus and promulgate the constitution within the date specified.

National Youth Pressure Campaign for Constitution Making (NYPCCM) organized whistle blowing program with just 100 days remaining for the drafting of the constitution. [break]

About 70 participants blew whistles for ten minutes at 12 in front of gate three of Birendra International Convention Center at New Baneshwar to show solidarity and to give pressure to the concerned authorities.

The organization has been carrying out various nationwide campaigns from Mechi to Mahakali involving people from local levels as well. NYPCCM started its campaign for timely drafting of the constitution in Jhapa on February 8 and their campaign is to end at Mahendranagar on February 28.

The campaign has now reached Pokhara and a meeting with various organizations is scheduled to take place on February 18.

"As the campaign has been moving across the nation, we have been drawing many supporters, especially local youths who now believe that drafting of constitution by May 28, 2010 is necessary and all sorts of pressure should be given," says Deepak Kumar Bhattarai, chief organizer.

When asked why he chose this way of protest, Ashok Dharnal, one of the organizers replies, "We want a peaceful form of protest without disturbing the common people. Blowing whistles is symbolic as a reminder for the ´sleeping´ authorities that only 100 days have remained and that they have to act instantly and sincerely.

Moreover, I believe that this program has made youths aware of the short time remained and that they cannot sit idle."

Similarly, Peace for Nepal organized ´Gulaf (rose) Andolan´ to give further pressure.

Dr Sushil Koirala, president of the organization requested all to pressurize the Constituent Assembly (CA) for successful drafting of the constitution, to promote national unity and peace. He also asked the members of CA, political parties, various organizations and common people to ensure the rights of Nepalis by making proper constitution.

He said that even though ´Gulaf ´ may have different colors it is still a rose. Likewise, we may be from different social and lingual backgrounds but we all are Nepalis. So we should promote national unity and support the timely drafting of the constitution.
