KATHMANDU, July 21: Youths have demanded that a provision of a high level national youth commission be included in the new constitution.

Giving out their feedback to the preliminary draft of the constitution on July 20 and 21 during the 'One Youth, One Suggestion campaign organized in the Capital corresponding to the two-day public holiday announced by the government for the collection of feedback on the same, youngsters have opined that the formation of such a commission will help to empower and mainstream youth issues."Formation of the youth commission will help in empowering and involving youth in the nation building process. That's why I've recommended it in the new constitution," said 25-year-old Basant Upadhyay, who was participating in the campaign, held in Bhrikutimandap on Monday.

The 'One Youth, One Suggestion' campaign was organized by the National Youth Alliance for Reconstruction (NYAR) in Bhrikutimandap on Monday and New Baneshwar on Tuesday. It aimed at collecting suggestions from the youth to be included in the new constitution.

Narendra Khatiwada, coordinator of NYAR, said that they organized the feedback collection program to facilitate youth to have their say in the new constitution.

"The Constituent Assembly (CA) is organizing feedback collection across the country. Everyone might not be able to make it to the designated place to give their feedback. We organized this program so that we can solicit youth's views and collectively submit them to the CA secretariat," said Khatiwada, explaining the purpose behind organizing the campaign.

Other than the provision for the commission, youth have also provided made a remark on issues concerning the governance system, federal structure, election and citizenship rights.

Khatiwada said, "Many young people opined in favor of the directly elected president/prime minister system. Most of them were also for the 5% threshold in the election system. They have also strongly opposed the discriminatory provision regarding women and citizenship rights in the draft of the constitution."

Sanjay Khadka, who was jotting down his suggestions for the draft constitution, said that the CA should accommodate the opinions of people in the new constitution. "The feedback collection should not be limited to a mere process. The CA should make sure that constructive feedbacks are actually incorporated in the new constitution," he suggested.
