KATHMANDU, June 29: The yogurt business amounted to over Rs 1.54 billion in the formal sector alone on Saturday, which marked Asar 15. The day, also celebrated as National Paddy Day, is known as day to eat yogurt, beaten rice and banana across the country.


In addition to this, there has been a business of yogurt worth about Rs 500 million from the informal sector as well, according to rough estimates.

The amount of yogurt was sold on behalf of Dairy Development Corporation (DDC), Nepal Dairy Association, and Dairy Industry Association alone.


It is estimated that only 6.2 million liters of yogurt were sold by the three bodies selling dairy products on Saturday. Pralhad Dahal, the president of Nepal Dairy Association, said that yogurt was sold at an average rate of Rs 170 per liter.


In addition to this, according to President Dahal, Juju Dhau from Bhaktapur and additional yogurt worth at least Rs 500 million was sold through registered vendors across the country.


According to Arniko Raj Bhandari, former President of the Dairy Industry Association, the sale of yogurt doubles on Asar 15 compared to regular days. 


On normal days, daily consumption of yogurt from the formal sector totals 727,000 liters.
