Writ petitions filed against ‘party-split’ ordinance

KATMANDU, August 19: Writ petitions have been filed against the ordinance relating to split of political parties at the Supreme Court (SC).

KATMANDU, August 19: Writ petitions have been filed against the ordinance relating to split of political parties at the Supreme Court (SC).



As of Thursday, five writ petitions including a petition by advocate Prabesh KC have been filed at the apex court.

The government introduced the ‘party-split’ ordinance on Tuesday following the prorogation of parliament on Monday. President Bidya Devi Bhandari then issued the ordinance on Wednesday.


Within hours of the issuance of the ordinance, the CPN-UML and Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) split. The UML faction led by Madhav Kumar Nepal and the JSP faction led by Mahantha Thakur registered CPN-UML (Socialist) and People’s Socialist Party, Nepal (Democratic), respectively, on Thursday.
