Works on opening section of Araniko Highway begin

KATHMANDU, Aug 1: Works on opening some 37-kilometer section of the Araniko Highway from Tatopani to Khadichaur have begun in Sindhupalchok district from Saturday.

The highway has been obstructed at different places due to landslides on this stretch.


The highway is being opened under the leadership of the Nepalese Army and in coordination with the engineering squad of the Chinese Armed Police and the other security bodies of Nepal as per a decision of the government.

A joint team of the NA, the Chinese Armed Police and other security bodies of Nepal has been mobilized for this purpose. Nineteen engineering and 20 supporting equipments brought from China have been employed for removing the landslide deposition and opening the road.

The NA Directorate of Public Relations states that the Nepalese Army has the plan of opening the road section removing the entire landslide within some 15-20 days with the NA providing security in a coordinated manner during the work period.

The work on opening the road section has been started coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and China and the Army has expressed the belief that the opening of the highway would help further deepen the friendly relations between Nepal and China, besides facilitating the operation of the obstructed trade and transport.
