KATHMANDU, Feb 6: A young woman has been arrested on charges of 'honey trapping' an individual by contacting him on the pretext of seeking maintenance of a rice cooker and extorting money later.
According to the District Police Range (DPR), Kathmandu, the arrested individual Asmita Acharya, 28, a permanent resident of Chitwan, currently residing in Kuleshwor, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-13 extorted as much as Rs 1 million from the victim after threatening him that she would lodge a rape case against him if he did not pay the ransom.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Kaji Kumar Acharya the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office (KVCIO) informed Republica that Acharya had contacted an electric appliances repairman under the pretext of maintenance of her electric rice cooker. However, she seems to have had the intention of making criminal profits by extorting the repairman.
“After the very first meeting, she repeatedly contacted him through her mobile phone and threatened him that if he did not pay the amount as demanded, she would frame him in a rape case, register a complaint with the police and humiliate him in front of his family and friends,” SP Acharya said.
According to the KVCIO, Acharya had forced the victim to pay Rs 1 million by threatening with the rape case. Out of the total amount, the victim had agreed to pay Rs 300,000 immediately through a check and the remaining Rs 700,000 in a week.
After the victim reached the police for help, a team deployed from the KVCIO arrested Acharya from Kuleshwor on Tuesday afternoon. A check of Rs 300,000 and an iPhone mobile phone were seized from her room. According to the KVCIO, Acharya has been sent to the Kathmandu DPR for further investigation and the range has pursued a case related to criminal profiteering (extortion) against her.
