KATHMANDU, June 19: Tourists visiting Nepal can now expect a much easier travel, thanks to a host of digital support available in the country. Of late, software developers have introduced programs which tourists can use to find out details of tourist hubs, trekking routes, location of hotels, restaurants and other places on their mobile phone or a GPS device. The best part of such programs is that the user need no Internet access to use the services or pay any cost for them.

Nepal GPS Solution (NepGS) has recently created a digital map, placing maps of eight popular tourist destinations in the Global Positioning System (GPS). The destinations include Pokhara, Bhaktapur, Dhankuta, Janakpur, Palpa, Ilam and a trekking route to Shyarpu Lake in the Rukum district.

Map Editor and one of the founders of NepGS Bijay Dewan said that the company is making the service available for free during the Nepal Tourism Year (NTY) 2011.

We are mainly focusing on tourism but we plan to build maps of all the cities in the country and make them available to tourists for free, he said. He unveiled that in the next phase the company would be focusing on trails. He said, "If any organization assists us, we can make the maps of trails available free of cost."

Users need not purchase a GPS device as the service can be used through smart phones as well. Dewan said, "After downloading the maps from our website, users will have access to fully routable maps." The option of fully routable maps allows users to find out the time required to travel the distance, the possible shortest distance and to navigate towards desired destination.

Similarly, the other service that is going to ease the life of tourists is called tourist online guide. Launched by IT solution provider Gforce Service and Technology, the service allows users to not only visit desired destination using a GPS device but also track down the whereabouts of the tourist, if needed.

"We are launching GPS tracking incorporating online support to tourists shortly," Sabin D Joshi, Business Development Manager of Gforce Service, said. He further said that the company was capable of offering voice communication and operator assistance to tourists as per their requirement.
